A January 2015 survey indicates that only 1 in 5 young males in Ohio know they’re at the age at highest risk for testicular cancer.
The survey, conducted by Talk About TC, asked 500 Ohio men, age 18-24, “At what age are men at highest risk for testicular cancer?” Respondents were given multiple-choice age ranges to see if they could identify 15-35 years-old as the age at highest risk.
18% of respondents indicated, 15-35 years-old
53% of respondents indicated, 35-55 years-old
27% of respondents indicated, 55-75 years-old
3% of respondents indicated, 75-95 years-old
Although it can occur at any age, testicular cancer is the leading cause of cancer in guys age 15-35. This survey targeted young males between the ages of 18-24 because they are at an age most likely to have recent interactions with the secondary or post-secondary education system. Despite these possible interactions, over 80% were not able to identify that they are at the age most at risk for testicular cancer.
The survey was conducted as part of the Talk About TC initiative to end deaths from testicular cancer in the state of Ohio by the year 2020.
