Ohio Parents Aren’t Telling Their Sons About Testicular Cancer

Ohio Parents Aren’t Telling Their Sons About Testicular Cancer

A January 2015 survey indicated that 69% of Ohio parents indicated they had not spoken to their son about testicular cancer.

The survey, conducted by Talk About TC, asked 300 Ohio parents over the age of 35, “When your son was between the ages of 15-35 did you ever speak to him about testicular cancer?”

31% of parents indicated Yes

69% of parents indicated No

Although it can occur at any age, testicular cancer is the leading cause of cancer in guys age 15-35. The survey assessed whether parents spoke to their sons about testicular cancer when their son was at an age at highest risk for the disease. The results indicate that, despite the sensitive nature of the disease, in a majority of households testicular cancer education is not starting at home.

The survey was conducted as part of the Talk About TC initiative to end deaths from testicular cancer in the state of Ohio by the year 2020.
